Author of Black November: the 1918 Influenza Pandemic in New Zealand and New Zealand’s leading authority on the 1918 influenza pandemic.

Geoffrey W. Rice (b.1946), ONZM, FRHistS, is an independent New Zealand historian, and an amateur painter and sculptor.

Geoff was Professor of History at the University of Canterbury 2006-10 and retired in 2012, having been on the staff since 1973. His was the first PhD in History awarded by the University of Canterbury, in 1974.

He has published 20 sole-author books, two co-authored biographies, and three edited books, including the second edition Oxford History of New Zealand (1992).

He has also published 22 academic articles in peer-reviewed journals, and a further 50 referenced articles and encyclopedia entries. Besides 25 conference papers, he has published over 60 reviews and newspaper articles.

He has delivered over 100 public lectures, on various historical topics as well as the 1918 influenza pandemic.
